The Training Program
Hospital Terms
Each Hospital Post is designed, not only to contribute to the hospital's service provision, but also to meet the learning needs of doctors training to be General Practitioners.
QRME provides a one day workshop for GP Registrars completing their Hospital Term. This workshop provides general advice on the GP Training Program, placement options and the standards necessary to achieve FRACGP.
Basic and Advanced Terms
During the Basic and Advanced Terms GP Registrars commence work and training in a General Practice setting. A list of accredited practices can be found at the following page. GP Registrars in the AGPTP General Pathway are eligible for placement in any of the locations listed. Registrars in the AGPTP Rural Pathway are only eligible for placements in locations specifically identified for the rural pathway.
Registrars are employed in the Practice in accordance with the "National Minimum Terms & Conditions for Basic & Advanced GP Terms" document.
Educational activities during this time include:
In the Practice
- Development of a learning plan
- Direct observation of Registrar consultations with constructive feedback (ECT Visits)
- Direct Face-to-face training
- 3 hours per week (Basic level)
- 1.5 hours per weeks (Advanced level)
Teleconferences
Fortnightly midweek teleconferences of approximately 1 hour are held. Presentations may be from Specialists, GPs, Allied Health Professionals or GP Registrars. The active participation of all GP Registrars is expected. Educational resources to support these teleconferences will be provided electronically.
Education Release Workshops
Registrars are required to undertake 20 days of educational activity outside the practice setting during their Basic and Advanced Terms. Fourteen of these days are taken up by Consortium-organised workshops (4 x three-day workshops and 1 x 2 day workshop), with the remaining six days to be arranged by Registrars themselves. GP Registrars are expected to consult QRME personnel as to the appropriateness of educational activities.
Divisional CME Activities
Many Divisions of General Practice run educational activities at which Registrars would be more than welcome. A calendar of activities will normally be available at the Registrar's Practice, but certainly available from Divisional Offices. A searchable list of activities is available online via RRMEO.
Subsequent Terms
Subsequent GP experience can be undertaken for either a period of six months, or for twelve months. If a Registrar elects a six month period of GP training, then a further six months as an Extended Skill must also be undertaken.
The Subsequent phase of training is in preparation for independent general practice. The Registrar will be in an RACGP accredited general practice and will have a mentor who is available at all times on site or by phone.
Extended Skills Posts
Extended skills posts will be organized on an individual basis. The QRME has considerable scope for training within the hospitals and universities in Southern Queensland but does not feel limited by this geographic region and will develop linkages with other training institutions. We plan to be able to provide training in Aboriginal Health, Academic General Practice, Adolescent Health, Alcohol and Drug related Problems, Anaesthetics, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, ENT, Family Planning, Geriatrics, Obstetrics, Occupational Health, Ophthalmology, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation, STDs, Sports Medicine and Women's Health.
